This trip was a cover and feature story in
What would you say if I told you there’s a wave that’ll hit a point and then break for 600 meters, giving the potential for rides that can last over a minute with a wind direction that lets you simply park your kite and ride?
The world’s best ‘new kite spot’ – Punta Luna – lies secluded and very private in the Illescas National Park, Peru. Keeping in line with the other kite adventures that we provide, Punta Luna offers amazing kitesurfing conditions with exclusivity. Although Peru is a destination that more people are familiar with and is already on most peoples radars -it’s main difference to the rest of the kitesurfing destinations in Peru is that Punta Luna is located on conservation land that only grants access to individuals staying at the (kite) surf lodge. This means that like all the other destinations Reo Stevens Coaching provides, you will be somewhere “special” with minimal crowds around.

Your Host:
Wind, Waves and Weather Conditions:
The temperature throughout the year is warm, 25-30 degrees during the day and at night it cools to 18-20c. The wind is usually offshore in the morning ideal for surfing and side-offshore at mid day, ideal conditions for kiting and windsurfing. There is a point of rocks and a bay where a left world class wave of 600 meters runs. The beach is all sandy and there is nobody in the vicinity, almost like being on a private island. Early morning and sunset time you will want to use a 3.2 mm since water is chilly.
The wind is thermal generated and side offshore, it starts at noon until 5 pm. The direction is ideal to be able to surf the wave with the kite following you. Because it’s a bay the wave remains smooth and perfect, generating a safe and ideal scenario for kite surfing. Be prepare to run the best waves of your life.
The wind normally is between 15-25 knots. The kites used are from 7 to 10 meter.
Meals:
We offer complete cooking service; breakfast, lunch and dinner. We have a Chef, expert in traditional Peruvian dishes as well as International cuisine. The catch of the day is transformed thanks to Juanita in delicious Tiraditos and Ceviches, the kitchen is open so at any time you can have a snack or a drink.
No wind activities:
The Reserve has a series of trails were you will be able to see all kinds of birds and marine life. There is a large sea-lion colony, one of the biggest in South America. From the house and its surroundings you will be able to see Andean condors, flamingos and more than 50 types of birds. The fact that there is no civilization around makes things really interesting to watch raw nature happening minute by minute.
Specimens that you can find:
- Condors
- Penguins
- Sea lions
- Flamencos
- Wales & Dolphins
- Fox
Getting There:
The closest airport is Piura, there are direct flights from Lima, Capital of Peru. From Piura airport our drivers will take you directly to the lodge. The trip is around 2:30hrs.
